SEXUAL DIFFICULTIES 2 Common Sexual Difficulties Associated with Aging Sexual difficulties refer to the problems that make a person or couple unable to experience normal satisfaction from sexual activity (McCabe et al., 2016). There are numerous studies that have been conducted to quantify the most common sexual problems/difficulties associated with aging. The studies indicate that most sexual difficulties start at the age of 40 years with 43 percent of women and 31 percent of men reporting the issue (Hinchliff et al., 2018). It is because as one reaches the age of 40 years and above his/her sexual thoughts, fantasies, desires, expressions and abilities change drastically due to change in hormones, general health and the quality and availability of companionship. Although young people also experience sexual hormonal changes or lose of lover to discord or death, they can be corrected or treated. Such is not the case in old people as these changes are viewed as normal and part of the aging process. A study conducted in India showed that 40% of men above 40 years have some sexual difficulty. Such change was attributed to decline in testosterone level. Other changes include decline in sex interest due to increase of life stressors and lack of novelty, loss of libido due to depression, increased fatigue and lack of individual privacy. In aging women sexual difficulties include inhibited sexual interest, arousal difficulties, lack of orgasm and painful intercourse. For men, the levels of serum testosterone reduce at the age of fifty years and the decline continues steadily with increase in age. As these hormonal levels reduce, men’s sexual desire and the frequency of sensual thoughts decline. Also, decline in estrogen in aging women lead to low sexual desire and negatively affects the intercourse comfort. For this reason, many women in their postmenopausal
