AMERICA COUNTRY OF IMMIGRANTS 2 America Country of Immigrants Puerto Rican Americans, Cuban Americans, Mexican American and Hispanic Americans have very distinct cultural identity. Some groups have made a splash into main stream society while others have not had much success. These groups have strong family and religious back grounds. Puerto Ricans are not looked at as immigrants but as migrants, the relationship between the US and Puerto Rico and be tracked back to 1898 when the Spanish-American war began, furthermore in 1917 the “Jones Act” was enacted which granted US citizenship to Puerto Ricans. As of 1952 and by authorization by the US congress Puerto Rico became self governing territory of the United States they have their own constitution and legislature. Puerto Ricans have very strong religious background the majority are Roman Catholics, with various denominations of Protestant faiths, they have very strong superstitions. Many speak Castilian Spanish which is mainly spoken in north and central Spain, although English is taught in most elementary schools it still remains their primary language spoken in and out of the homes. In some political areas there is debate amongst Puerto Ricans whether or not they should keep their relationship with the United States or try for full independence. Puerto Ricans weather living in the united states or in Puerto Rico are struggling, with drug problems, a lack of educational opportunities, crime rates are within Puerto Rican Americans, and their familial structure is breaking down.
