Introduction Theoretical philosophy Personal identity- survival of death, what is it for you to be the same person over time Fatalism- future settled, open future illusion Time- time is not dimension not like space, past/future not real vs. time is like space God- exist beyond space (like #2), source/creator, supernatural being, Why not nothing?- why is there anything at all? Free will and determinism- choice or not? One time + laws of nature determines all latter states choice illusion Constitution- problem of material constitution. Statue and clay problem- not the same. Matter relate to thing itself Universals- universal properties shared. Addition thing beyond which they have in common. (chair) Plato said universals outside space and time plato's heaven Possibility and necessity- true and could or could not be different What is metaphysics?- unity within the field? Personal Identity Continued existence esp in the instance of surviving beyond the life span of your body Numerical versus qualitative identity
