Intramembranous Ossification • bone develops between sheets of fibrous connective tissue • bone does not develop from cartilage , as in endochondral ossification • Bones in fetus that form this way: flat bones of skull and mandible (plus, after birth, the “ soft spots ” on the skull will develop this way) 2. Endochondral Ossification • Bone develops by replacing portions of cartilage • Most bones of fetus form this way (exc skull bones and mandible); best explained in long bones Bone Growth Slide 1 of 7 Ossification: Bone Formation a) Initial formation of bones in the fetus: • May occur in 2 ways: 1.
