Dimensioning Guidelines – ME 1770 Section A General Rules for Dimensioning Add all dimensions necessary to fabricate the part. Always show overall dimensions, showing them as a reference dimension if necessary. Dimensions should include design intent. Metric: show leading zero. Inches: do not show leading zero. Always add a note to the drawing stating what the dimensions are. Ex. UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED, ALL DIMENSIONS ARE IN INCHES. Dimensions are read from the bottom of the paper (preferred) or the right side of the paper. Dimensioning Procedure Identify each type of feature in the part. Each feature must be dimensioned in size and location. Find the view that shows the feature as true size and shape. Dimension each feature location in the view showing true size and shape (Contour Dimensioning Rule). o Circular Features: locate the center in the view that appears as a circle or arc. Dimension the size of the feature.
