WORKSHOP #5: DAY 8 MTH 110 – 10 & 17 W11 DAY 8 : Wednesday 2/2 and Thursday 2/3, whole class OBJECTIVES: 1. Understand the nature of a system of linear equations in 2 variables (x & y), and the goal for SOLVING a system is to find the (x, y) which satisfies or is a SOLUTION for BOTH equations of the system. 2. Review the 3 methods for solving a linear system of equations ( graphing, elimination & substitution) and master/apply at least one method to a given system. 3. Be aware of 3 possibilities for a system’s solution form: one solution (x,y) (lines intersect), NO solution (lines are parallel) or INFINITE solutions (lines coincident (same line)), and how to distinguish such systems within each method. 4. Begin look at linear system applications, solving systems with 2 unknowns and 2 known relationships. SCHEMA ACTIVATION: Recall the internet usage and cost handout of 2 plans and methods of solution for finding when the two plans A & B were equal in cost. Present students with a more general system in x and y and have students share methods after clearly defining the goal
