What time is it? o Midsummer, after the feast of St. John o The night when young girls find their true loves o Fairies run amuck and mischief is made The play is set in Athens We first meet Theseus and Hippolyta (his wife-to-be) on the eve of their wedding Next, Egeus enters with his daughter Hermia, and Lysander and Demetrius What are their relationships? o Hermia and Lysander o Demetrius and Helena (eventually) What is the conflict? o Egeus wants Hermia to marry Demetrius, when in fact she is in love with Lysander What choice does Theseus offer? o "Either to die the death, or to abjure forever the society of men." Helena and Hermia are friends What do we learn from Helena's soliloquy? o She has decided to tell Demetrius that Hermia is running away Soliloquy - a character alone on stage speaking his or her thoughts aloud The mechanicals enter next. They are rude probably because they are rough/rural individuals, Bottom stands out and tries to take all the parts. They are planning to do a play at the wedding.
