Theater is a performance that places human experience before a group of people - an audience - in the present moment What are the necessary components of theater? o For theater to happen, two groups of people, actors and audience, must come together at a certain time in a certain place Ritual/Drama o Theater evolved from ritual o Ancient Greek and Egyptian rituals Theatrical Illusion o Theater creates the illusion, as we watch, that we are sharing an experience with others for the first time Theater's Immediacy o Theater is one of the most immediate ways of experiencing another's concept of life - of what it means to be human o Seeing a drama together in a theater is a communal experience Theater's Aliveness o Theater is a living art form, continually before us in present time until that final moment of the play Four essential parallels between Theater and Life… o Actors --- Humanity o Simulation --- Reality o Rehearsal --- Spontaneity o Audiences --- Society
