Alderman Thursday, December 02, 2010 2:05 PM What is the point of commemoration? o Celebrate a legacy o Bringing into the present something from the past, remembering what he stood for o Create something that will be remembered as a shared understanding Premises: o What we remember, and how we remember it, is going to be affected by the landscape that surrounds us If we change what is there now, it changes what we remember Not only changing the objects, but changing how people think about them o Changes in the landscape will find that some people there will be unsettled by the changes in the landscape People become used to certain aspects of the landscape and are resistant to change o Landscape symbols represent meaning Streets represent a symbolic space Spaces themselves carry symbolic value, which is translated into actions Symbolic space: What is it? o
