Afghanistan since 1979 1.) Important bc Afghanistan was the soviet counterpart to Vietnam. 2.) Country where U.S has been involved for at least 9 yrs. 3.) The NATOs are about to lose the war in Afghan. 1.) Afghan borders were determined by Russia and Britain in 19 th century 2.) It geography makes it difficult to establish control 3.) It has a multi-ethnic society that often trumps national identity 4.) It tried to not get involved in the early cold war and received aid from both us and ussr. 5.) Between 1960s and late 1970s received 2.5million from soviet union. 6.) Anti monarchy forces were clearly rising by the 1970s. 3 forces competing for power. 7.) Daoud Khan had a failed attempt at establishing a centralized gov in 1973. 8.) Communist Revolution in 1978(Saur). Wanted secularism and land reform. 9.) Two communist factions were in conflict. 1.) Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in December 27, 1979- Amin replaced by Barbak Kamal. 2.) U.S responded by supporting Mujahedeen
