Preparing for Lab 23: In Lab 23 you will apply many scientific skills that you‘ve acquired in Bio 204 and Bio 205—these skills range from making scientific observations to using laboratory equipment; from understanding controls and variables to manipulating variables to change the nature of an experiment; from data collection using software (e.g., MSEXCEL, IMAGEJ) to statistical data analysis; from writing in scientific format to analysis of scientific literature; and from hypothesis formulation and testing to experimental design. Lab 23 challenges you to use these lab skills creatively. In Lab 23 you will use variables and controls of your own choosing to design a physiology experiment and collect experimental data using Powerlab and Lab Tutor. You will demonstrate your scientific skills by demonstrating your ability to: 1. Ask scientifically meaningful questions based on your understanding of physiology. 2. Develop testable hypotheses related to these questions. 3. Design an experiment that either allows you to test a hypothesis or hypotheses or to make observations that would lead you to future questions or development of a hypothesis. 4. Collect data using Powerlab and Lab Tutor 5. Analyze your data using statistics 6. Clearly and su Criteria for grading: ccinctly communicate your findings in a full lab report Objective Criteria Ask scientifically meaningful questions based on an understanding of physiological mechanisms Thoughtfully constructed scientific question(s) posed to understand a physiological issue in Introduction Develop testable hypotheses related to these questions. Hypothesis formulated is relevant to question as stated, testable, with possible predictions. Design an experiment that tests a hypothesis (ses) or make observations leading to future questions or development of a new hypothesis. Experiment planned to test the hypothesis (ses) or make observations. Variables stated, relevant units listed. Methods described clearly. Collect data using Powerlab and Lab Tutor Competent use of PowerLab and LabTutor equipment and software Analyze data using Statistics Well annotated graphs and tables compare variables making correlations or cause and effect predictions possible. Results present documentation well. Discussion is thoughtfully and carefully written. Clearly and succinctly communicate findings in a full lab report Straightforward, easy to read. Topics proceed in logical order. Sentences direct, meaningful, and grammatically correct. Excellent:
