February 10, 2011 The Last Abortion Clinic Jackson, Mississippi-- they want to make it the first abortion free state in the nation There is only one abortion clinic left in the state of Mississippi More prolife legislation than any other state in the country Teen pregnancy is very high Prolife Movement (1980) Tactics: Fire bombed clinics, violent protests, &harassed and killed doctors Roe v. Wade (1973) abortion is a fundamental right and states cannot restrict abortions or ones ability to get an abortion in the first trimester Webster (1989) Judges wanted to overturn Roe v Wade They upheld Roe but changed the standards “undue burden” standard-- substantial obstacles (The Casey decision) What exactly is an “undue burden”? Americans United For Life Chicago, IL “changing law to protect human law state by state” Things to stop abortions: Women had to be informed with the risks Shown pictures of what is going on with the fetus at certain stages Requires both parent’s permission
