Unformatted text preview: Human Digestion Evelyn Millslagle SCI/241 January 18, 2011 Alecia R.Harris Your mouth begins to salivate when food is seen or smelled and this is the beginning of the digestion process. The parotid, sub maxillary, and the sub lingual glands are the three glands that cause the mouth to salivate and moisten your mouth in preparation for food to enter. Once the food enters, your mouth you begin to chew and while chewing we are grinding our food into bolus and mixing it with saliva to help lubricate and begin the process of absorbing the nutrients in the food. Once the food is chewed, it is ready to be forced down the esophagus in a process peristalsis, a series of rythmatic muscular contractions that moves the food into the stomach. The stomach and esophagus muscles are connected to the cardiac sphincter that is controlled by these muscles to allow the stomach to open to store the food.
