Aims To introduce the student to new ideas on semistructured or Web-like databases (SSD or WDB) by presenting some contemporary (graph, XML, and set-theoretic) approaches, in particular, on querying the WWW, which is considered as a large worldwide distributed unstructured database. To introduce XML as a technology for representing WDBs. In particular, to consider corresponding query languages to WDB and simple examples of XSL-transformation of XML to HTML, and the expressive power of a set-theoretic query language with reference to descriptive complexity theory.
