Checkpoint: Dorfman Pacific rolls Out a New Wireless Warehouse 1) Assume you are a Dorfman Pacific consultant. Apply the problem-solving process and present your answers to each step of the process. a) Define the problem. First we need to understand what kind of problem exists. The problem that Dorfman had within its warehouse system was that everything was based on a paper-based system. When the order was placed it was then sent to a warehouse supervisor, who in turn gave the paper ticket to a “picker”, who then drove a forklift to the section of the warehouse where he or she could expect to find the bin that contained the item they were looking for. They then picked the item and brought it back to the packing and shipping areas. The bins were all labeled by hand and were difficult to read and they sometimes held more than one type of product. Basically they had outdated business processes. The company’s ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning), system did not integrate well with the other systems that the company had in place. They more than likely had insufficient or old and outdated software, with inadequate database capability to handle the seasonal peaks that the company received from the big-box stores. Because they did not integrate well with the other systems that the company had in place tells me that it probably had insufficient telecommunications capacity and that the old system was not compatible with the new technology that was to be instituted. Another problem was the lack of employee training. Each employee had his or her own way of picking or retrieving an item. Because this is how they operated, when it came to special orders it slowed them down and resulting in inefficiencies. This could be due to the way the warehouse was set up or to indecisive or poor management. b)
