INTERNET TOOLS AT DIRT BIKES 2 Abstract In today’s business world it is necessary for communications within an organization to be as efficient as possible. Dirt Bikes’ current means of communication is old and out-dated and without the investment in new technology such as intranet software, will slow operations and growth of the company. I recommend a complete overhaul of the company’s IT infrastructure. In this paper I will explain to Dirt Bikes what an intranet is and how they can benefit from its use. I will explain how not only sales and marketing but also human resources, manufacturing, and production will all benefit from the use of an intranet. I will recommend at least two other tools that will not only benefit Dirt Bikes but its employees as well and how it will affect the company’s network if at all. Finally I will discuss the concept of providing wireless access to employees, the benefits and effect to the company.

INTERNET TOOLS AT DIRT BIKES 3 Internet Tools at Dirt Bikes Intranet what is it? It is “a collection of private computer networks within an organization. An intranet uses network technologies as a tool to facilitate communication between people or workgroups to improve the data sharing capability and overall knowledge base of an organization’s employees. Intranets utilize standard network hardware and software technologies like Ethernet, Wi- Fi, TCP/IP, web browsers and Web servers. An organization’s intranet typically includes internet access but is firewalled so that its computers cannot be reached directly from the outside.” (compnetworking.about.com/cs/intranets/g/bldef_intranet.html) An intranet would be vital to Dirt Bikes success by giving them the ability to communicate anywhere at any time and allow the company to respond immediately to the needs of its customers, order processing and part suppliers saving time and money by keeping up with its’ current inventory, and would make data available for viewing by all departments. Some of the benefits that Dirt Bikes would see are increased effectiveness and productivity because the system provides for rapid sharing of information and various other things such as customer feedback on its products. An intranet would enhance teamwork cooperation and information sharing among the employees through an integrated communication system. It is also cost- effective because it reduces the running cost of the company. With an intranet almost every document of the company can be published on the system saving the company a large amount of money which would have otherwise gone into printing and publishing these documents. Lines of communication are always open; it allows the communication with the head office and other departments and is the perfect tool to provide continuous updates and improvements within Dirt Bikes itself.
