ADONIJAH: A FINAL  CLAIMANT Prepares for himself “chariots and  horsmen, and fifty men to run before  him.” “His father had never at any time displeased him by  asking ‘Why have you done thus and so.’” (1 Kgs 1:6) Obtains support of Joab and Abiathar Fails to obtain support of Zadok, Nathan  and David’s guard. Prepares sacrificial feast attended by  king’s sons (except Solomon) and “all the  royal officials of Judah” (1 Kgs 1:9-10)

CONSOLIDATING THE MONARCHY Final instructions from David “Do not let his gray head go down to Sheol in  peace” (1 Kgs 2:6): Settling scores with Joab. A new regime: Zadok replaces Abiathar as high priest “So Solomon banished Abiathar from being priest to  the Lord, thus fulfilling the word of the Lord that he  spoken concerning the house of Eli in Shiloh” (1 Kgs  2:27, cf. 1 Sam 2:27-36) Benaiah executes and replaces Joab as  commander of the army.

HISTORY OF SAPIENTIAL  LITERATURE Ancient form of writing in Ancient Near  East Writings similar in form and content to  Proverbs and Ecclesiastes appear in Egypt and  Mesopotamia ca. 2300 BCE. Cf. “Words of the Wise” in Prov 22:17-24:34 largely  reproduce the Sayings of Amen-em-ope Directed toward students aspiring to  acceptance in imperial courts Relatively late stratum of Hebrew Bible: Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Selected Psalms (e.g.,  Pss. 1, 8) Continues in “Deutero-Canonical  Literature.” a.k.a Apocrphya Wisdom of Solomon, Ecclesiasticus (Ben  Sirach).
