Politeness in different lgs Certain languages require that you mark social hierarchies/politeness lexically Honorifics E.g. “Would the person (hon) like to eat (hon) at his house (hon)?” Words have both elevating and non-elevating equivalents; sometimes 3-way distinction E.g. T/V; person classifiers; “to eat” Constant indexical marking of relationships
