ETHICS IN SOCIAL RESEARCH 2 When conducting research in a social setting, the sociologists must be sensitive and aware of his or her general principles and ethics. Two scenarios have been presented; a researcher studying dorm life and a research questionnaire in circulation. For each scenario, I will identify an ethical component; express my feelings concerning the scenario and my opinion of the procedures. In the first scenario a researcher is studying dorm life on a campus. The scenario does not state the type of data that the researcher is trying to discover. During the time spent researching there was an unanticipated discovery of alcohol violations conducted by campus residents. When a researcher prepares to conduct a study they should plan for the data they will discover. In this scenario there is not a plan to analyze data on alcohol use among residents. Since there is not a plan for such data, the researcher decides that this information is considered an unanticipated research opportunity and does not release his information in his report.
