Friedrich Schiller (1759-1805): Aesthetic Education and Study Questions to “The Glove” and “The Diver” Schiller was among those who saw the French Revolution as the hope for the State of Reason. When he heard about the atrocities in Paris and that Ludwig the 16 th had been taken prisoner and executed, he feared that anarchy would break out in France. For Schiller, the progression of the Revolution was proof that Enlightenment alone was not going to make people better off. He formulated his new educational goal in his theoretical piece “On the Aesthetic Education of Humanity,” in which he stated: “All improvement in the political realm should start with the refinement of character—but how can character become refined under the influence of a barbaric state constitution? For this purpose, a medium must be found, which the state does not associate itself with, and sources for which must be opened, which must be kept pure of any kind of political corruption. The means are the fine arts; the sources open up in their immortal examples.” Schiller expected Artists to educate the human race. Kant’s “Critique of Pure Reason” (1781), had shown that with all the reason in the world, one could not know everything. A human can only see that which is available to him through his senses, and that is not reality in itself. This convinced Kant of the need for
