Cherlin – Marriage Go-Round Chapter 4 o Expressive individualism growing  Less about just being a unit and more growing as individuals within  your marriage Not one partner dominating the other o Women becoming more independent  Women being able to work on their own and have economic  independence o These both lead to divorce increasing b/c people saw staying in marriages  as less required Chapter 1 o Declining job prospects have put a strain on marriage Blue collar jobs are not suffiencient to support marriages o This has been seen as a big problem with African-American marriages  Few blacks marry  They rely on women center families Men are not economically able to provide for their families (black  men) o Hispanics are even doing better o College education lowers the tension in a marriage over these issues
