Exercise Which situation best matches each distribution a) Binomial b) Hypergeometric c) Poisson 1) The number of baby girls born every day in a given  hospital. 2) Out of 100 girls born in a hospital, the number with  a birth defect. 3) Out of the 200 babies in a hospital, half are sick, a  random sample of 10 babies is taken to run blood  test to find out the number that are sick in the  sample.

CONTINUOUS RANDOM  VARIABLE The set of possible values cannot be counted, like  those contained in an interval Examples : lifetime of an electric bulb, length of  service at a service location, total daily sales, etc. probability density function  is used. The  (cumulative)  distribution function  is obtained by  integration

4 Probability density function Area under curve = 1 The function of the  curve is given by f(x). P(a<X<b) = area under  curve between a & b. P(X=a) = 0 P(X  a) = P(X>a) Entire area  under curve =  100% The proportion of values  between 60 to 80 as a  percentage of all values is  represented by the blue area
Image of page 4
Uniform distribution Values are uniformly or evenly distributed over a  given interval. Example: Buses arrive at a specified stop at 15- minute intervals starting at 7 a.m. If a passenger  arrives at the stop at a time that is uniformly  distributed between 7 and 7:30, find the probability  that he waits less than 5 minutes for the bus.

What students are saying

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
