HACETTEPE UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONICS ENGINEERING ELE-314 ELECTRONICS LABORATORY III EXPERIMENT 6 SCHMITT TRIGGER CIRCUIT 1. PURPOSE : To investigate the Schmitt trigger (ST) circuit. 2. THEORY : Note: Read the circuit analysis of a Schmitt trigger circuit given in your course book (Digital Integrated Circuits by Thomas A. Demassa and Zack Ciccone ) on page 140-143. Although the circuit is not the same as with the one we observed in the experiment, it may give you an idea ST is a voltage comparator circuit. To trigger the circuit, there is a voltage needed which is greater than a pre-determined level(V 1 ). This voltage is called Max. Triggering Level. To form the circuit as before, the input voltage should be reduced to below V 2 that is called Min. Triggering Level. V1 and V2 are not equal and the difference between them is called Hysteresis Voltage. V H = V 1 - V 2 A Schmitt trigger circuit and its input-output transfer characteristics are shown in fig.1a and fig.1b respectively.
