In the chapter Time Gateways Tim Flannery is describing the different ways that scientists use the fossil fuels and other things from the earth to distinguish between the divisions of the geographical time scale. There are 3 things that can change the earth drastically enough to open a gateway in time. They are the shifting of continents, cosmic collisions and the driving forces of greenhouse gases. Flannery describes times gateways in three sizes, small, medium and large. Medium gateways cause the earth to experience a massive extinction caused by the greenhouse gases. Earths most recent case of this was 65 million years ago when the dinosaurs disappeared. An asteroid struck earth causing atmospheric pollution. The chapters purpose is to get the reader to understand how scientist identify certain eras in time. The sixth chapter begins with the first humans that inhabited earth. The ice age that us humans developed in is called Pleistocene and that means “most recent times”, hence the title “Born In The Deep Freeze”. The first humans evolved from ancestors
