MG 665 Managerial Communication Lesson #9 Assignment #2 Study the case, "NutraSweet" on pages 183-189 of the text Management Communication: Principles and Practice (3rd Edition). 1. Who should speak for the company, and why? Robert Shapiro, an attorney, should speak for the company as he has significant knowledge and experience with the product. In addition, as an attorney, he has the ability to present his case well. He should also be able to present the negative aspects of the argument and effectively address them. There are always two sides to every story, and as long as they are both presented and considered, then an appropriate conclusion can be made. 2. How credible are NutraSweet’s critics, and how should this affect NutraSweet’s response? Certainly, Science magazine and various university professors are credible sources, but NutraSweet also has their sources as well. They did go to the FDA as well as the UAREP and gained their approval. It must be remembered that nothing is without risk. A reasonable amount of certainty is truly all any scientist can determine with his/her findings. As long as they prove that they rigorously tested the substance as much as they could, then that is all that they can do. It is not a normal situation to have diet soda sitting out in 120-degree weather for prolonged periods of time. NutraSweet was never recommended for baking, so it should not be criticized in that situation.
