1 through 1. After several tedious delays from clouded weather, on the 14th ofMarch we gladly stood out of King George's Sound on our course toKeeling Island. They had nothing to eat excepting what they could catch, such asostriches, deer, armadilloes, etc. The corral is anenclosure made of tall and strong stakes. These saucer-shaped layers crop out on the margin, formingperfect rings of many different colours, giving to the summit amost fantastic appearance; one of these rings is white and broad,and resembles a course round which horses have been exercised;hence the hill has been called the Devil's Riding School. This latter seems merely to be produced by the entanglement of thesingle threads. Another ride was to P. Judging from the appearance, and from similar cases inEngland, I supposed that the air was saturated with moisture. I asked several of the inhabitants if they knewwhere it laid its eggs: they said that they knew nothing of itspropagation, although well acquainted with the eggs of the landkind--a fact, considering how very common this lizard is, not alittle extraordinary. The well-rounded pebbles ofporphyry were mingled with many immense angular fragments of basaltand of primary rocks. These feelings ofpride are beginning to wear away; but formerly a leading man wouldsooner have died than undergone the indignity of carrying thesmallest burden.
