My Big Fat Greek Wedding Discussion Questions 2. Tula is Greek, which is a minority here in the United States so she goes through the stages of minority identity development. The first stage is unexamined identity and is characterized by a lack of interest and exploration in one’s identity. Tula does not understand why she has to go to Greek School and can’t be in Brownies. She even gets annoyed at her father when he tries to work in being Greek into every context. This stage can also be characterized by positive attitudes toward a dominant group and negative attitudes towards one’s own group. In the clips of Tula when she was growing up she wanted to be just like all her classmates with Wonder Bread sandwiches and thought that her culture was embarrassing. This stage mainly happened when she was first growing up since she really didn’t know much about her culture. The second stage is conformity where a person can internalize the values of the dominant culture and have a strong feeling to become like the dominant culture. People in this stage may also have a negative self-image and even negative views of their cultural group. Tula is very resistant to accepting her family. She has a very low self-esteem and just wants to fit in with white Americans. She is embarrassed by her big, loud family. Right around the time where she realizes she will never be a perfect Greek, like her sister, is the time where she really desires to be part of a dominant
