Roberts 1 Review and Summary of When I Was Miss Dow This story is very interesting in the sense that it mixes aliens and humans in a unique way. Instead of the cliché aliens attacking humans, the aliens in this story want to become humans and learn our ways. The story itself is distinctive because of its take on human life. Many themes and symbols can be taken from this story as it is very interpretive. The story begins with three characters: a Warden, the male protean and his uncle. One day the Warden tells the young male alien that it’s time for him to go out and change his shape. He transforms into a female botanist, Martha Dow. In order to absorb this new persona he spends four days in a tank. He then goes and starts to work for Dr. Arnold Proctor, a head biologist. The doctor’s special study is Kootas (a type of dog). “Miss Dow” has a little crush on the Doctor because of his dedication to his work. One morning, the protagonist asks the Doctor to take an X-ray of his personal Kootah to make sure there is nothing wrong with her so he can breed her. The Doctor quickly agrees but once the Uncle hears of this he becomes very displeased. The Uncle says that there is nothing wrong with the Kootah and that if the Doctor
