Washington and the Struggle Against White Supremacy: The Southern Educational Tours, 1908-1912 (New York: Palgrave MacMillan, 2008) David Levering Lewis, When Harlem Was In Vogue (New York: Penguin Books, 1981) Amilcar Shabazz, Advancing Democracy: African American and the Struggle for Access and Equity in Higher Education in Texas (Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 2004) Course Description: The students will cover the experience of African-Americans from around 1875 to 1960. The focus of this class will be on African-American history and their agency during the period of reconstruction to the modern civil rights movement. This class will be taught from both a topical and a chronological perspective. The African-American experience from 1875 to around 1960 provides students with an opportunity to analyze and review numerous historical interest, concerns, and problems that have confronted African-American from the end of the reconstruction to the struggle for enfranchisement and desegregation. This course will also analyze how the presence of African-Americans has profoundly affected the nature and development of American
