Clearly Bull Connor, sheriff of Birmingham, was complicit with those who attacked the Freedom Riders because he arrested the riders with a smile . 7. Justice Department official, John Siegenthaler, arrived at the Birmingham bus station in time to get his skull fractured with a lead pipe . 8.
