GENDER IDENTITY : Psychological sense of being “male” or “female”. Develops between 18 – 36 months; firms up by 3 years old. Sex assignment is anatomy from birth. GI is not always reflective of anatomic gender. Intersexuals have gonads of one sex, but external genitalia that are ambiguous or resembling other sex. How much of Gender Identity depends on environmental vs bio or genetic factors? “Boys reared as Girls”: Reiner et al (2000) followed genetic males raised as females. All 25 showed rough play as children; 14 declared themselves to be male.
