Range of cultural approaches: permissive to restrictive . Allow masturbation, simulated coitus, experimentation, believe that kids mature by engaging in behavior R (minority): punish masturb. and sex play, don’t talk @ sex, keep kids ignorant. Correlates w/adult restrictiveness . female premarital sex common in 2/3 of societies but more common among males. Current culture: strong reaction against suggestion that childhood is sexual. (even asking @ it makes them aware). In past, children slept in close quarters with adults, observed farm animals. By end of 19th century, the “childhood innocence” was ingrained. Freud challenged. Infancy (0-2 years) Bio capacity for pleasure does not = psych awareness. Behavior resembling sexuality not motivated in adult sense. Misinterpretation of Freud’s theory of children’s libido. Not sex in a narrow sense, but pleasure in a broad sense. 6-12 months kids rub genitals against objects and have genital play but purposeful masturbation is rare until 2.5 – 3 years when rhythmic becomes more common. Pelvic thrusting has been osberved. Even fetuses in ultrasound have been observed rubbing genitals. Curiosity about sex begins

Early childhood (3-8): Curious sex games more common (e.g., doctor between 6-10). Punishing can increase secretiveness and guilt but does not stop behavior. Vague notions of genital dif b/t sexs by 3-4 15-20% (recall) first masturbation 5-8. Same sex play. (not marker of future behavior). Homosociality Minimizes opposite sex behavior. Only rarely do children engage in more adult like behaviors. Preadolescence (9-13) : begin to know “facts of life” in early pre but are often misunderstandings. Masturb more common (Kinsey’s: 45% of B; 15% of G). Other studies: 20-40% of kids mast before puberty. Tends to homosociality, but later in the phase mixed gender activities occur (jr high dance?). Include same and opposite sex kissing and touching each other’s genitals or mutual masturb (e.g., “circle jerking”).

Adolescence : table 13.4: Puberty: begins w/ appearance of 2ndary char. Ends w/ cessation of long bone growth. Culture : most have coming of age ceremonies. Girls: Rites are centered around menarche. Common elements: seclusion, purification, body modification. Rites include: confirmation and “coming out”. Menarche: b/t 10 -18 but declining (fig 13.1). Nutrition (critical fat hypoth) and health care. But has leveled off. FSH from pituitary -> ovaries secrete estrogen -> stim.
