Chapter 1: Succeeding in Business Communication Mgmt 346 Dr. Vlajcic In the News (Case Study): Lack of communication (FEMA, National Guard, state and local governments) after the Katrina disaster in New Orleans. Why was communication so critical to relief efforts? We will discuss the following in depth in connection with chapter 4, but briefly, communication has become critical because of a number of trends in today’s world. They all have this in common: they represent change. 1) The information economy. (Importance of language as deliverer of the “product.”) 2) Technology. 3) Global marketplace. 4) Diversity. 5) Flattened management hierarchies. 6) Team-based management. 7) New work environments. 8) Emphasis on ethics. With whom are we communicating? Internally? (C-workers, employees, bosses, board of directors, etc.) Externally? (Customers, suppliers, government, etc.) Why is it so important to communicate effectively? What do we mean by “effectively”?
