Chapter 4: Navigating the Business Communication Environment Mgmt 346 Dr. Vlajcic In the News (Case Study): Practice Makes Perfect. In other words, the way we communicate has changed, and we can become better communicators by practicing. In practice, communication takes place in changed environments, both internal and external. The main changes, or trends, are: 1) The information economy. (Importance of language as deliverer of the “product.”) 2) Technology. 3) Global marketplace. 4) Increased focus on quality and customer needs 5) Diversity. 6) Flattened management hierarchies. 7) Team-based management. 8) New work environments. 9) Emphasis on ethics. 1. Information Economy: More and more, we are selling information and knowledge. If this is so, the “product” is delivered via language—hence the importance of communication skills. 2.
