Chapter 5: Communicating Across Cultures Mgmt 346 Dr. Vlajcic In the news case study: Daimler-Benz and Chrysler. What went wrong with this merger? What were the cultural differences that led to the breakup? What lesson(s) can we take away from this case? Importance: We live and work in a global market, and even in the United States we have a culturally diverse population. We need to be able to recognize cultural differences. Culture What is “culture”? Define the term. It will help if we identify some things that reveal something about a culture; these are called “cultural signifiers.” Examples? (Language, beliefs, values, customs, economic systems, religion, clothing, food, time, space, family structure, formality, social structure, status, individualism vs. collectivism, attitudes toward age, etc.) How do these vary from one culture to another?
