History of Civilization Terms Chapter 22 Louis XVI – he alienated his subjects through indecision and bad politics; his leadership led to discord and then to the mob Estates-General – (three “estates”) when Louis needed more money he called them; they saw it as a way to get some advantage over the king; three estates: clergy, nobles, commoners Cahiers – reform proposals Tennis Court Oath – the Third Estate swore not to disband until they had produced a French constitution National Constituent Assembly – a group legally elected to write a constitution Storming of the Bastille, July 14, 1789 – French Revolution began Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen – intended as a preamble to a new constitution; proclaimed human “inalienable rights” to liberty, property, security, and resistance; Assignats – new issue of paper currency Civil Constitution of the Clergy – made all clericals salaried public servants, abolished all archbishoprics, and reduced the number of bishoprics Legislative Assembly – Declaration of Pillnitz – the Austrian and Prussian rulers called for European intervention to save the French monarchy Girondins – exploited the foreign threat in emotional appeals that rallied the center behind a war to “save the Revolution”; Jacobins – argued against entering war; war would harm the Revolution and end government economic aid for the common people; Danton – denounced the king as a traitor to France and those who did not share Jacobin views as fools; Robespierre – a fanatical follower of Rousseau; publisher of a violent newspaper that
