Existential Analysis and Therapeutic Care “Psychotherapy consists in the paring away of all that stands between us, the props, the masks…carry overs from the past…that we use by habit and collusion…as our currency for relationships” R.D. Laing “…to be free is to allow what-is to manifest itself” Mick Cooper, Existential Therapies “And now here is my secret (said the fox), a very simple secret. Existential Phenomenology: Three Steps One: Rule of the epoche or phenomenological reduction Bracketing all assumptions, biases, and pre-understandings so as to clear a space for the phenomenon to show itself Bracket does not mean deny, negate, or eradicate our assumptions, but to ‘suspend’ ‘withhold’ or ‘parenthesise’ them so as to leave room for alternate understandings of what shows itself Two: Rule of description “Describe, don’t explain” (Don Ihde) Stay with the lived experiences as they actually are When you move to naming (categorizing), explaining or evaluating you have moved away from describing Three: Rule of horizontalisation Avoidance of hierarchies of significance or importance upon items of significance (Spinelli) Each one having equal value or significance (Spinelli) That which is meaningful is not “rank ordered,” neither positive or negative, right or wrong; it just is…it is that which enhances or thwarts the “experience of being alive” (Campbell)…in the world

I’ve been in the educational scene all my life as far back as I can remember, and I’ve seen the following: the language pathologist sees the child as a lisp or a stutter or a language problem; the occupational therapist sees him as a motoric problem; the school psychologist sees him as a learning or emotional problem; the physical therapist sees him as a muscle problem; the neurologist sees him as a central nervous system disorder; the behaviorist sees him as a behavioral problem; the reading consultant sees him as a perceptual problem; the school administrator sees him as an organizational problem; and
