Thematic Apperception Test The Thematic Apperception Test was developed by Henry Murray and Christina Morgan in 1935. The TAT is a projective test, based on the assumption that the subject will project aspects of their personality onto the ambiguous stimuli presented to them in the black and white cards.

Thematic Apperception Test Those interpreting the TAT use these projections to make inferences as to the nature of the subject’s motives, personality, and interpersonal relationships. While there is some controversy as to the validity of the projective techniques, they remain extremely popular with those who administer psychological tests (Lillienfeld, Wood & Garb, 2001).

Thematic Apperception Test The TAT itself is comprised of 31 black and white cards. There are two 20 card sets, one male and one female. These are ideally administered over two sessions. Subjects are presented with a card and instructed to make up a creative, imaginative story with a beginning, a middle and an end. Examples of the cards include:
