Politicians from across the political spectrum use the word “family” in their speeches and printed material to indicate that they care about average people struggling to make a living. In fact, almost all of us are part of families--rich and poor, single and married, parents and childless across the entire social spectrum. In the current health care debate we hear a lot about “family-friendly policies”, giving families “choices”, keeping the government “out of the lives of families”, promoting “family values”—each phrase used with the goal of attracting support from particular constituencies and shaping the debate about the impact of pubic policy on families.
