Superwoman and Lonjas Chicana Poets On November 21 st , during Chicano Studies, several poems were read . Of the few poems that were read aloud, two of them stood out to me . One of these poems was called “Superwoman” and it was written by Gloria L. Velásquez, a former student of Xico’s . The second poem that I really enjoyed was called “Lonjas”, written by Verónica Guajardo, another former student . In the poem “Superwoman”, the narrator is stating how she, the superwoman, does the dishes, takes care of the children, and basically all the other house chores. In this first part of the poem, Superwoman Chicana represents her motherly qualities . She is speaking for all chicana women who provide for their children and keep the household maintained . In the next portion of the poem, Superwoman calls herself a “super-liberated chicana” . She is now representing herself as the student that must work hard in school . She attends class and does all of the required work without saying a word
