Rice Density Test Excerpts from a Class Presentation By Rajarajan Subramanian What is Rice Density Test ? • Originally developed by James Rice, and is standardized as ASTM D-2041 in 1964. • Rice Density Test is a test to compute the Maximum Specific Gravity (Gmm) of a loose Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA). • The maximum theoretical density (or Rice Density) is the unit weight of the mix if it were compacted so it contained no air voids. Test Procedure • Step 1 . Sieving & Batching of materials to prepare 600, 750, 900, 1200, 1500 and 4500 gram samples. • Step 2 . Mixing & Aging the aggregate samples with asphalt (Making of Hot Mix Asphalt samples) (See Figures 1 & 2): After mixing, 2 hours aging was done with interruption of stirring the samples every one hour for uniformity in aging the whole sample. After aging is completed, the mix needs to be broken down into pieces(Conglomerates), but care should be taken not to break the aggregates(See Figure-3). • Step 4 . Cool down the mix overnight. • Step 5 . Next day, the mix needs to be broken down again to get the conglomerates separated. Weigh the mix (A), put it into the volumetric conical flask with Cascade(Wetting Agent) and agitate in the Orbital Shaking Table for about 15 ± 2 minutes (See figures 4, 5,6,7 & 8).
