Why have the environmental sciences become an integral part of the K-12 curriculum? - The environmental sciences became an integral part of the K-12 curriculum because health, living conditions, technological development, the economic future and our relationship with nature are all shaped by environmental actions. 3. Is the Earth a closed or open system? Except for what? - The Earth is a closed system for matter except for small amounts of cosmic debris that enter the Earth’s atmosphere. 4. What does this mean? (being a closed system) - This means that all the elements needed for the structure and chemical processes of life come from the elements that were present in the Earth’s crust when it was formed billions of years ago. 5. What 6 elements are critical components of all biological life? - Carbon, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Hydrogen, Sulphur and Phosphorus 6. 80% of the weight of our human body is made up of what 2 elements? - Oxygen and Carbon
