Date: April 21, 2011 Teacher: Subject: History Social Science Grade : 3 Standard(s) of Learning: Social Science 3.5 English 3.9 and 3.10 Title: A Journal of Discovery GENERAL OBJECTIVE(S): NCTE/IRA Standard 5. The students will discuss the explorations of early American explorers Christopher Columbus, Juan Ponce De León, Jacques Cartier, and Christopher Newport. Students will understand the reasons behind the explorer’s exploration. INTRODUCTION: The teacher will review with students, the American explorers and their explorations that have been studied in class. After the review the teacher will ask the students to think about one of the explorers and their exploration that was discussed; teacher may also assign students to a particular explorer. Once students have chosen an explorer the teacher will give the writing prompt: Pretend you are an early American explorer. Write a journal entry describing your exploration. What did you see? How did you feel? What else did you experience? SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE(S) The student will. . . PROCEDURE(S) The teacher will. . . Answer the questions on the graphic organizer pertaining to their chosen explorer Give students a graphic organizer with questions to record their information for their chosen explorer Use their answers from the graphic organizer and incorporate them into their journal Have students use the questions to guide their journal Use the five senses to add detail to their writing Ask students to think about their five senses to add detail to their writing CLOSING: Students will share the journals that they wrote with the class
