Components of Grammar Phonetics – the sounds that make up a language Phonology – the rules of how sounds are combined in a language Morphology – the rules of word formation in a language Syntax – the rules of sentence formation in a language Semantics – rules that govern how meaning is expressed by words and sentences in a language Prescriptive Grammar Rules – describe what is “grammatically correct” to say Descriptive Grammar Rules – describe what we actually say Consonant Description (pg 53) Manner of Articulation o Stop – made by completely obstructing the airstream in the oral cavity o Fricative – made by forming a nearly complete obstruction of the vocal tract o Affricate – a quick stop followed by a fricative o Nasal – made by lowering the velum and opening up the passage to the nasal tract o Liquid – middle of vocal tract is blocked forcing air to the sides o Glide – slight closure of articulators so that if the vocal tract was more open it would
