How does energy affect an ecosystem? Energy is transferred through an ecosystem through something called trophic levels. There are generally 4 or 5 trophic levels in an ecosystem. The reason there at not more levels is because about 90% of energy is lost each time you move up a level. Energy is lost because of animal movement, hunting, and normal bodily funcitons.
