Nicole Crowell February 28 th , 2010 Extra Credit Assignment #1 Everyday in different areas of the world people used a database to do and create a variety of different projects and systems. While each project and systems might contain different information, there are some similarities that one can find in all databases. It is during the design phase, however, that the differences in the database can be found. In the design phase of the database, one can choose to use the Entity-Relationship Model(ER Model) or use the Unified Modeling Language (UML). While there are differences in the two, the Unified Modeling Language did adopt the ER model while introducing some variations of its’ own. 1 Peter Chen, created the ER Model in 1976. The ER Model was extended to create the extended entity- relationship model which is more commonly referred to as the ER Model. 2 The entity relationship data model, the ER model, defines the methodology used in the analysis and the design of information based systems. 3
