Chapter 5 Power and Leadership Question 1. Provide examples for each personal source of power. Why are some forms of power more influential than others? There are five sources of individual power: legitimate, reward, and coercive, expert and referent. Legitimate Power is the 1 st position power. This position powers are organization based and are not based on individual merit. An example of legitimate power is any executive board of directors. They are appointed to the board because of the titles that they hold but are often looked at by subordinates as people who are out of touch with the daily inter workings of the company. Reward Power is the 2 nd position power. Those in the position of leadership can influence employees through a reward system. An example of such power is when a manger asks an employee to do extra work and extra hours with the incentive of an extra week of vacation. Coercive Power is the third and final position power. The most common example of this power is threatening punishment as away of getting an executive’s subordinates to comply with a request of directive. Expert Power is the 1 st power that is person based. This power is based on a person knowledge or expertise. An example of this power is the guide of a hiking expedition. The guide is the leader and has the power because he or she has the knowledge and expertise. Referent Power is the 2 nd power that is person based. The power this person exudes comes from the response they get from others. They are well liked and respected and that is the reason why people follow them. An example of this power is Oprah. Many people follow her advice and guidance simply because she is respected by the people. Some forms of leadership are more powerful than others because they are a voluntary action versus a forced action. The text uses the words “the harsher the source of power the less willing the subordinates will be will to comply”. The position powers respect is given simply because the organization that they work for gave the executive and
