At 20 o C, the vapor pressures of benzene and toluene are 51.3 and 18.5 kPa, respectively. As the pressure is reduced at constant temperature T = 20 o C, at what pressure will boiling begin? What will be the composition of the first bubble of vapor? Assume that the liquid phase is an ideal solution and the vapor phase is an ideal gas. 2. (14 pts.) A solution of ethanol ( eth ) and chloroform ( chl ) at 45 o C with x eth = 0.99 has a vapor pressure of 177.95 torr. At this high dilution of chloroform, the solution can be assumed to be ideally dilute. The vapor pressure of pure ethanol at the same temperature is 172.76 torr. (a) Find the partial pressure of the gases in equilibrium with the solution. (b) Find the mole fractions in the vapor phase. (c) Find the Henry’s law constant for chloroform in ethanol at 45 o C. (d) Find the vapor pressure, p , and vapor-phase mole fractions ( y eth and y chl ) at 45 o C for a chloroform-ethanol solution with x eth = 0.98.
