Atmospheric pressure Air exerts pressure on the Earth’s surface. This pressure is known as atmospheric pressure. At the sea level, the standard atmospheric pressure is 1atm = 760 mmHg As elevation increases the pressure decreases. Useful to know: The density of air at sea level is about 1.2 kg/m³(1.2 g/L). The average mass of the atmosphere is about 5,000 trillion metric tons or 1/1,200,000 the mass of Earth.
