Unformatted text preview: Conservatism To put conservatism in a bottle with a label is like trying to liquefy the atmosphere.(Russell Kirk ) Conservatism Has Many Meanings Less of a Political Doctrine Way of Life Way of Thinking Origin And Development Ideology was formed during the French Revolution Caused the Division of the Whig party Some members were against the war and others were for it Edmund Burke voiced his opinions Edmund Burke/Tradition 1729-1769 Became politically active in college Moved to England to study Law Wanted to preserve tradition Opposed any attempts to alter existing institutions (Had influence) Created the ideology Conservatism Human Imperfection Conservatism is philosophy of human imperfection Pessimistic vs. Optimistic Human kind should not get the benefit of the doubt Law & Order Organic Society-Changeless society- Organic-ism- Anomie- Family Concept- New Right Hierachy and Authority Society is naturally hierarchical characterized by fixed or established social gradations Power, status, and property are always unequally distributed There most be leaders and followers, managers and works, those who work and those who stay at home with the kids Rejecting liberal belief that authority arises out of a contract made by free individuals Authority develops naturally, necessary and beneficial to society Believing in a limited authority Property...
